Mark 9:19,20 - O faithless generation!

9:19
Jesus is rather dismayed with them. It seems that He is dismayed with both the remaining disciples and the people in general. It is implicit in this that Jesus expected the people to be able to deal with the matter themselves, in the sense of praying to God in faith. There are many debates about healing today. There are some who really don’t expect much in the way of healing at all, and there others who expect much but see little. Some argue that we should not expect to see healing on the scale that existed in Jesus’ day and of the early church. I get the impression from Scripture that Jesus would actually want us to expect and see more healings than we do.

9:20

So the boy was brought to Jesus. Now we would tend to say that the boy was having epileptic fits, or something similar. However, the text says “when the spirit saw Jesus”, so there was definitely demonic activity involved in this. The spirit threw the boy into a convulsion, and he fell to the ground foaming at the mouth. We tend to want situations like this to be either all purely medical, or purely demonic. While we should not be looking for demons under every stone, we would be unwise to dismiss the reality of demonic activity, because Jesus was fully aware of the reality of demonic activity.
