John 13:25-30 - What you are about to do, do quickly

13:25-27

Jesus replied that it was the one to whom He gave a piece of bread. He then gave Judas a piece of bread. On receiving the bread we are told that Satan entered Judas. Carson thinks that this signifies possession. I am not so sure that it necessarily represents complete demon possession. Judas was freely cooperating with the devil, though he did not realise the full import of what he was doing. Jesus tells Judas to do it quickly.

13:28-30

The other disciples were unaware of what was really happening, thinking that Jesus was merely telling Judas to hurry up and do the shopping! One might think surely John and Peter knew as they had just asked Jesus who the traitor was. However, they may well have known then that it was Judas, but would not imagine that Jesus would tell the traitor to carry out his work quickly. The natural reaction would be to stop the traitor, not encourage him in his treachery! Judas did leave. “And it was night”. There are obvious allusions here. The darkest hours are about to begin with darkness getting its way. But even though darkness was getting its way, it was God’s will that was being done, God’s plan of salvation that was being put into effect.
