Exodus 6:7,8 - I will take you to be my people

6:7

The redemption is not merely a matter of being set free from slavery, but being brought into relationship with God. They would be taken as God’s people. This is something that Israel never properly appreciated, and is why they were forever chasing after false gods and going to other nations. With the salvation of the gospel, we need to appreciate that it is a matter of being brought into relationship with the Lord. They were to know not merely that they had been set free, but that it was the Lord who set them free. Likewise, sometimes God does miracles to set people free from situations, or to heal them. It is vital that the person set free realises that it was the Lord who has set them free, not merely that they have been set free. We see this working negatively when Jesus healed the ten lepers. Only one of them came back to thank Jesus, the others were simply glad that they had been healed (Luke 17:12-17).

6:8

They would be set free from slavery, brought into relationship with God, and given the land of Canaan. We are set free from sin and other things that bind us, we are brought into relationship with the Lord, and we are given “territory”. God wants His people to exercise godly authority over areas of life. Right back in Genesis we read of God giving man dominion over the earth, being told to subdue the earth and be fruitful (Gen 1:26-28). God would give the land to them as a possession, fulfilling the promises He made to Abraham.
