Exodus 6:4-6 - I have heard the groaning of the people

6:4,5

The building upon the previous revelation is emphasised here. God had promised to give them the land of Canaan, and this He would do. They had lived there as strangers, sojourners, soon they would live there as inhabitants. “Moreover, I have heard the groaning ...” So there were two motives for God intervening now: (i) the promises made long ago; and (ii) the present suffering of the people.

6:6

Because of all this Moses is to make a declaration to the people, a declaration of God’s salvation. The Lord is going to set them free from their burdens and slavery. They would be redeemed with “mighty acts of judgement”. There would be acts of judgement upon the Egyptians. The final plague would apply to all people, but the blood of the lamb would protect the Israelites from the judgement. One of the aspects of the cross is that it is a mighty act of judgement. The cross is what we all deserve, but we can be spared by faith in Christ, by the blood that He shed.
