Exodus 5:1,2 - Let my people go

5:1

So Moses and Aaron, his mouthpiece, go off to see Pharaoh. God had warned them that Pharaoh would not let the people go without all the signs that Moses and Aaron would later perform (Ex 3:19). Moses’ first request, or rather a declaration of the word of God, is that the people would go into the wilderness to worship God, it is not actually to let them go completely.

5:2

Pharaoh treats the request with contempt. He asks who is the Lord and why should he pay any attention to what this Lord says. This is a very similar reaction to what society has towards God’s ways. We may say that sex outside marriage between a man and a woman is wrong, is against God’s ways, but society could not care less. Society, like Pharaoh, does not know God, and so will not obey.
