Exodus 5:15-21 - Make bricks!

5:15-18

The foreman saw the stupidity of it all and went to Pharaoh asking why he was doing this ridiculous thing. They probably hoped to get a sensible answer, but would be disappointed. They also tell Pharaoh where the blame for the production reduction lies. Pharaoh responds in his typical fashion, claiming the Israelites are idle. He is reacting against the idea that the Israelites would go out to worship the Lord. We should not be too surprised when a government starts making illogical decisions against people worshipping God.

5:19-21

The foreman saw that they were getting nowhere with Pharaoh, so they demanded that the people actually keep up the production rate. This is how tyrants operate. They will only fall when someone is brave enough to stand up to them, and it does take courage to do so. They also see Moses and Aaron and put the blame on them for making the Israelites abhorrent to Pharaoh. People who bring God’s message of freedom will not always be welcomed.
