Exodus 4:18-20 - Go in peace

4:18

Moses had some allegiance to his father-in-law, and sought permission from him to go back to Egypt. The reason Moses did this is that Jethro would have to make other arrangements for looking after the sheep. Jethro is an interesting character, alternatively called “Reuel”. This latter name means “friend of God”. He is called the priest of Midian and his name “Reuel” would seem to imply that he was a priest of God, rather than some pagan deity. Whatever the case, he has a very positive influence on Moses’ life, and freely lets Moses go to Egypt.

4:19,20

God then tells Moses to go back to Egypt “for all the men who were seeking your life are dead”. God knew the fears that were in Moses’ heart and the reasons for them. One might wonder why didn’t God tell Moses this beforehand, it might have saved a lot of the argument! However, God wants us to live out of trust in Him, not out of our assessment of the circumstances. So Moses sets off with his wife and family, and donkeys. He also took the “staff of God”, the one that would be central to performing wonders.
