6:1
So Jesus has told His disciples that their righteousness must exceed that of the Pharisees, and has then has given several examples of what this means in practice. In 5:16 He said “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” He now gives a warning about what 5:16 does NOT mean. It does not mean making a show of our good deeds so that others think we are wonderful. It is not for our glorification, but for God’s glory. If we do good deeds in order to win praise from men then we will receive no reward from our Father in heaven, it will not please Him.
6:2
5:17-20 gave the principle that Jesus had not come to do away with the Law, but that our righteousness must exceed that of the Pharisees (or the outwardly religious, to make it more general). Then this was followed by examples illustrating the outworking of this principle. In 6:1 He gave the principle of not doing our good deeds for show, and now we get the outworking. So if we are giving to the poor we do it discreetly. Now we must be clear in all of this that we do not interpret all this as new Laws, it is a matter of the heart, of the attitudes that we have. So this does not mean it is a disaster if it becomes known that you have given to someone or to some cause or other. Are we giving to help the person, or to make ourselves look good? Then we again find Jesus saying we will have received our reward in full if we give for show. The reward is becoming more Christlike, more like God.
