Jeremiah 11:1-5 - Listen to the terms of this covenant

11:1-3
The people of Israel were convinced that they were God’s people and that He would protect them, but they were being presumptuous. God had made a covenant with them at Sinai, and this covenant was the basis of Israel having possession of the Promised Land. They had forgotten this, and so God tells Jeremiah to remind them of the terms of the Covenant. There are people today who forget this when they talk about modern day Israel. As Christians we too can become presumptuous. The whole Bible is a warning against such an attitude. God reminds the people “cursed is everyone who does not obey the terms of this covenant” (Lev 26:14; Deut 28:15).

11:4,5
God had rescued the people from slavery in Egypt, but it was done under the terms of a covenant. The gospel is NOT Jesus loves you. He does love us, far more deeply than we can ever imagine, but the gospel is not simply “Jesus loves you”. It involves our sin guilt, it involves repentance, and we are saved in order to become like Christ. We are saved in order to live our lives on God’s terms not ours. God gave the Promised Land to Israel on the basis that they would obey Him. Jeremiah says amen to this.
