11:9,10
The people of Judah and Jerusalem were united. Indeed, Israel and Judah were united. They were united in disobeying the Lord. Unity, like zeal, is good, but only if it is unity or zeal for the right cause. We cannot obey the Lord properly without unity and zeal, but if unity and zeal are in the wrong direction they are no good at all. At the time of Jeremiah, the unity was in the cause of disobeying the Lord, they had broken the covenant and had followed other gods and were serving them.
11:11-13
The Lord’s response was to bring a disaster on them, and one that they could not escape. There is no amount of planning or plotting they could do to avoid it, and even crying out to the Lord would not help. We should note that this does not mean that if they had truly repented the Lord would not have answered, He surely would, but there was no chance of this happening. In the early days God would rescue them even though there was no deep repentance in the land. But this had gone on for hundreds of years, and they had had numerous warnings. Now, their time was up.The people would go and cry out to their idols, but this would be to no avail. And they had countless idols.
