Matthew 5:18,19 - Not an iota, not a dot

5:18
Just in case we have not got the point, Jesus stresses it yet again. Not a jot or tittle will pass away until everything is accomplished. Now while justification was completed on the cross, sanctification has not been completed. That is an ongoing process. The Law is still relevant in revealing God’s will. Jesus could not express this more strongly, so we should pay close attention to what He says.

5:19
Jesus continues with this theme, and it involves a severe warning for those who advocate teachings contrary to God’s ways. “will be called least in the kingdom of heaven” would seem to imply that they would not necessarily “lose their salvation”. However, that is a side issue. The focal point is that we should be teaching people to live godly lives (and seeking to live such lives ourselves!). We should also remember that right at the end of Matthew the Great Commission is to make disciples of all peoples, teaching them to obey everything that Jesus has commanded (Matt 28:19,20).
