5:14
“You are the light of the world”. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12), but we too are the light of the world. We are not meant to be hidden, we are not meant to isolate ourselves from the world. Instead we are to be a city on a hill, visible to all. This ties in with the previous verse, for if we are to be on display, then we need to have something good to show!
5:15
Jesus uses another analogy, no one would light a lamp and then hide it under a bowl, that would be a pointless thing to do. So look at the implication of analogy. Jesus did not come to give us a new set of rules, He came to give us a new life. Now would God give us new life and then tell us to hide? Of course not! We have been given new life and God wants the world to see it. We have been given new life so that we can be the light of the world (5:14). Notice also how God works. He does things, without Him there would be nothing. The world was created by Him, we were saved by Him. But then He involves us in what He is doing. His plans are focused around us. We need to make Jesus the centre of our lives, then we will find that we have a central part in God’s plans.
