Matthew 5:12,13 - You are the salt of the earth

5:12
So why are we blessed if we are persecuted or falsely accused? First, great is our reward in heaven. This is not just what happens after we die, but God is pleased with us when we trust Him and remain faithful. Then we are reminded that the prophets were treated in the same way. Moreover, we are to “rejoice and be glad”. We are to react in a very different way to what one might expect.

5:13

Salt was used as both a flavouring and a preservative. The salt of the region contained impurities and could lose its saltiness. The disciples of Jesus are meant to act as a flavouring and a preservative to the world. If we become contaminated then we will be ineffective. Sadly we see numerous examples of this in our society where much of the church is hopelessly ineffective. We are to flavour the world by adding the goodness of God to society. This has happened in societies respecting human life, education and health systems etc. We are also to be a preservative, slowing down the decay in society. There is also a severe warning for churches that do lose their saltiness.
