Judges 14:4-7 - He liked her

14:4

This insert causes some people problems, wondering how God can approve of Samson doing something wrong, but this is looking at things from entirely the wrong angle. Rather this verse is explaining something of the sovereignty of God. God nowhere approves of Samson. Samson taking a Philistine woman was wrong (and later events show that it was not a good choice!). God worked through Samson’s own sinful desires to achieve his own purposes, namely to confront the Philistines. Someone might object “what if Samson had not demanded to marry a Philistine woman?” Well, first of all he did, and God knows the hearts of all men and women. But if Samson had proved to be a God fearing man, wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord, then God’s plans would have worked out differently, and more directly.

14:5-7

So Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother. On the way a young lion came roaring towards Samson. We then read that the Spirit of the Lord came upon Samson, giving him great strength, and Samson tore the lion apart with great ease. His parents apparently were not with him at this point. Now why did the Lord do this? It was part of the plan to confront the Philistines. The gift of the Spirit here was under the control of the Lord.
