They took Paul to the Areopagus so that his views could be debated more publicly. So they asked him to explain more fully what “this new teaching” was. The ideas were strange to them. Because we live in a world that has been deeply influenced by Christian ideas for hundreds of years we do not realise how alien the ideas are. Tom Holland has promoted this concept in his book Dominion. The downside of this is that as our societies abandon all adherence to Christianity they rapidly start to decay and collapse.

Luke seems to regard the Athenians in rather low esteem. Considering them to be babblers who spent all their time debating the latest ideas, and not doing anything that was actually useful.Maybe we could say that the proliferation of podcasts is a similar phenomenon today!
