Judges 13:5-7 - A man of God came to me

13:5

The boy was to be a Nazirite, and his hair was never to be shaved. He was to be dedicated to God from the womb. We can find the full details of the Nazirite vow in Numbers 6, though there a person chose to make a Nazarite vow, and then only for a season. Samson had no choice in the matter, he was assigned this role before his birth. He would “take the lead in delivering Israel”. There were no battles as such in his lifetime, and the deliverance was not completed in his lifetime either.

13:6,7

The woman, who remains nameless throughout the narrative, goes to her husband to tell him what had happened. She tells him everything, except the mission for which the son would have.  She describes the visitor as “a man of God, who looked like an angel”. Angels often appeared as men. The angel did not tell the woman who he was, nor where he came from, and she didn’t ask him. She also made sure that her husband was aware of the Nazirite vow.
