Luke has a higher opinion of the Berean Jews, and he had two reasons for this. The first was that they “received the message with great eagerness”, the second was that they “examined the scriptures” to see if what Paul was preaching was true. This is a practice we should all employ, and if we are preaching we should encourage our hearers to do the same. Our preaching should be firmly grounded in the Word.

The result of this was that “many of them believed”. So a number of Jews became believers, along with “a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men”. So we see the gospel going beyond the Jews. We also see again Luke’s emphasis on the role of women. The “prominent women” would probably be related to prominent men in the city.
