4:26
“I who speak to you am He”. Jesus clearly claims that He is the Messiah. Jesus is the one who provides living water. So why did Jesus speak to this woman plainly, while with the Jews He was much more circumspect. The problem was that for the Jews “Messiah” had many political overtones, they would misunderstand its true meaning. It is interesting that the Samaritans, who were in many ways “further from God” than the Jews were more able to receive Christ. Though this, of course, is generally true, with the gospel going out to the Gentiles, and the non-religious are sometimes more open to the truth than the religious.
4:27
In speaking to the Samaritan woman Jesus had broken all sorts of taboos, so when the disciples arrived back they wondered what Jesus was doing, and why He was doing. However, no one was willing to question Him asking why. Nor did they ask the woman what was going on, for that would have made them “guilty” of breaking the taboos as well.
