Genesis 19:6-11 - Get out of our way

19:6-8

Lot is appalled at the behaviour of the men, and pleads with them not to do this. He then takes the terrible step of offering his daughter instead. We must note that what we have here is description, not approval, of the action. Maybe Lot is acting out of fear, but whatever the case he is not acting well. Women were created in the image of God just as men were, and women are co-heirs of Christ with men. Lot may also have been motivated by a deep concern for treating the visitors well and acting out of desperation.

19:9-11

However, the men were not for being placated. Sin has truly got a hold of them and made them behave most unreasonably. Nor did they have any respect for Lot, treating him as an outsider. They also seem to think that Lot does not approve of their homosexual behaviour. They then start to act violently. At this point the angels intervene and bring Lot back inside. They shut the door and then struck the men with blindness. The men continued to grope at the door. Given that they were now blind one might think that they would have gone away in a panic. But why continue to grope at the door, one can imagine a scene like something out of the walking dead.
