19:15,16
The son-in-laws may have refused to be saved, but the angels take Lot’s daughters and his wife. However, Lot lingered. This was a time for action, not a time for lingering. So the angels grabbed him. As it says, the Lord was being merciful to Lot. He did not deserve to be saved. People can be slow to realise the danger they are in.
19:17-22
It seems that once the angels had got them out of the city Lot and his family had to run for it. Being saved is not a passive thing. We are entirely dependent upon the Lord, but He gives us things to do. We need to repent, we need to believe, and we need to act. There was not be no more lingering. Even so, Lot has not finished lingering yet! He seems to think that disaster will overtake him if he flees to the hills. Quite why he was afraid of the hills isn’t clear. Instead he wants to flee to a smaller city. Surprisingly the Lord grants him this request, so he flees to Zoar. God’s patience is quite amazing at times.
