18:22-33
The men went on down to Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham continued to stand in the presence of the Lord, and we have the well known incident of Abraham pleading with God to spare the city if a certain number of righteous men are found in the city. I have to say I think a lot of nonsense is talked about this interchange, mainly when talking about Abraham and his thinking. We should remember that Abraham’s nephew Lot is in the city, and Abraham cared deeply for him. My own view is that Abraham’s prime concern is for the safety of his nephew, and all the talk about sparing the city is really Abraham wanting his nephew to be spared. Of course, I could be wrong, but it does actually seem to fit. We should also note that God would have spared the city if ten righteous men had been found. God is slow to anger. On the one hand this means He is incredibly patient, but it also means that when He does act in judgement things really are too far gone for there to be any other reasonable course of action. So the exchanges comes to a close and the Lord leaves Abraham and Abraham returns home.
