Genesis 19:12-14 - We are going to destroy this place

19:12

The angels then speak to Lot, wanting to know if he has any other family members in the town. Now remember that Abraham was praying for Sodom because he was concerned for the wellbeing of his nephew, though he never mentioned that directly to God. We see here that God was indeed concerned for Lot, He had already planned to take steps to rescue Lot and his family. Note that Lot’s daughters are included, God was more concerned for their safety than Lot was!

19:13,14

The angels then tell Lot that they are about to destroy the place because of the prevalence of evil. Note the phrase “outcry against its people”. The incident outlined a few verses earlier demonstrates that this outcry was justified. Lot went to his son-in-laws to tell them to come and be rescued. It would seem that they were betrothed to Lot’s daughters but not married at this stage, betrothal being a much more permanent relationship than our engagement. In our terms they were future son-in-laws. However, the son-in-laws did not take Lot seriously. Not everyone will take the chance of salvation. People often complain about God sending people to hell. The truth is that anyone who turns to Christ will be saved, the problem is often people’s refusal to take God’s offer of salvation.
