4:49,50
The official is concerned only about the immediate health of his child, and quite understandably so, and so again implores Jesus to come down. Jesus does not do this but simply tells the official that he can go for his son would live. “The man believed”. We are given no clue as to why the man has now got faith. Maybe he had accepted and understood the rebuke Jesus gave in v48. Whatever the case, he believed and “went on his way”. Note that initially he thought that it was absolutely essential for Jesus to come to the house to heal his child. We can often think that God has to do things in a certain way in order for Him to answer our prayer. This is not so. Our faith needs to be in the person of Jesus Christ, in the character of God.
4:51-54
On the way home the official was met by his servants who informed him that his son was getting better. The official asked what time it was that his son started to recover, and this turned out to be the same time as when Jesus had said “Your son will live”. The man’s faith was further deepened, and his household believed as well.
