Genesis 18:1-5 - Three visitors

18:1,2

Abraham now receives three visitors. The account begins by saying “The Lord appeared to Abraham”, and because there were three visitors some have tried to argue that this is an example of the Trinity. However, this is rather fanciful, with little real support. Indeed, Heb 13:2 makes it clear that it was angels who visited Abraham. Abraham exercised typical middle eastern hospitality, even to the point of bowing low to the ground for them.

18:3-5

In the spirit of hospitality Abraham is keen for them to stop by and receive something from Abraham. First he offers to have their feet washed. This was very important in the culture of the time and place. Remember that Jesus washed the feet of His disciples. This was both a great service, and an example of humbling oneself. Abraham also offers them food. Given that Abraham had many servants, it would be a servant who actually took care of all this. The visitors agreed to stay.
