Jeremiah 33:4-7 - I will hide my face from this city

33:4,5

This seems a very grim warning, and not an “unsearchable thing” that one would wish to be told, but it is not the end of the story. The description is rather graphic, w"th tales of the houses and palaces of Jerusalem being filled with dead bodies. And God reminds Jeremiah that He will slay them in His anger, and hide His face from the city because of its sin. We have a choice here. The choice made by many is either to just ignore such passages, or to outright deny the authenticity of them as the word of God. This is not a good choice. We need to fully understand God’s anger against sin if we are to fully understand His salvation.

33:6,7

The judgement is all too real, but it is not the end of the story. “I will bring health and healing to it”. “I will heal my people and let them enjoy abundant peace and security”. God would bring them back from captivity. And the bring back would involve both Israel and Judah. He would rebuild His people. It was God who had sent them away, it is God who would bring them back. God’s plans are beyond human understanding, and we make a serious mistake when we try to reduce them to the level of our understanding. For instance, we like to make the gospel out to be God loves us and forgives us, and not to think too much about the judgement. This approach will inevitably run into serious problem at some point along the way.
