17:19-21
The disciples are amazed, wondering why they got nowhere, but Jesus dealt with the matter so simply. This implies that they had been trying various things. Why the difference? Jesus tells them directly that it is because they have so little faith. Just to emphasise how little faith they had He tells them that if they had faith the size of a mustard seed they could move mountains. He then adds “nothing will be impossible for you”. Let us again notice two things. The first is that though He rebukes them, Jesus does not say they are bound to stay stuck in their present state. The second is to repeat again the expectation that Jesus has of them, that doing great things by faith should be normal.
