Jeremiah 32:13-17 - Nothing is too hard for you

32:13-15

Jeremiah gave Baruch clear instructions to ensure that the documents would be safely preserved for a long time. This was symbolic of Jeremiah’s belief that God indeed have plans for Israel that were for good and not for evil, to give them a hope and a future. Now we should remember the amount of judgement that is around in Jeremiah, and the clear depiction of the evil in Judah. Yet God’s plans are plans for salvation. Our thinking is very shallow when we think that judgement and salvation are somehow opposed to each other.

32:16,17

Jeremiah then prays to the Lord. He starts by declaring that God is the Sovereign Lord, and the one who made the heavens and the earth, and made them by His great power. “Nothing is too hard for you”. God as creator is an absolutely essential doctrine, and one that we need to be acutely aware of if we are to have faith in Him. This awareness of God as creator is nothing to do with silly debates about how old the universe is, nor about the means by which He created things. There is no harm in thinking about these things, nor even debating them as long as we keep things in perspective and keep these matters in their proper place. If we ever think the means of creation are essential doctrines then we have become fools. But the fact that God is the creator and sustainer of all things is absolutely central. Today in the West we face increasing opposition, living in an evermore godless society, and one that is increasingly hostile to Christianity. And we should remember that in many, many countries our brothers and sisters face much worse. We need to know that those who claim such power and wisdom are mere mortals, here one day gone the next. We are all in God’s hands, and He is the sovereign Lord.

So let us focus on what really matters, and boy, do we need to focus on it in these days.
