13:40-42
The weeds being pulled up and burnt represents things that cause sin and those who do evil. At the end of the age the Son of Man will send out His angels and they will weed out of His kingdom all who do evil, and everything that causes sin. Note that it is the Son of Man who sends out His angels. This implicitly shows that Son of Man is a divine title, and shows what Jesus saw Himself as divine. The things that cause sin, and evildoers will be thrown into the fiery furnace. These are the words of Jesus and need to be taken seriously. We tend not to talk about the judgemental words of Jesus, but there are plenty of them!
13:43
“Then the righteous will shine like the sun”. “Bright shining as the sun” is part of the last verse of Amazing Grace, but look at what needs to take place, the uprooting of evil. We do not take evil seriously enough, or, rather, we are selective in the evil we consider to be serious. The Old Testament prophets were in no doubts as to how serious evil was, and Jesus is no different. We should also note that the servants were not the ones to root out the weeds, but the angels. We do have a responsibility to deal with false teachings, but it is not our responsibility to ensure there are no weeds at all. If we do that we will root out good stuff as well. We are not competent for the task.
