12:46,47
Jesus’ mother and brothers were stood outside. Someone told Him they were there wanting to speak to Jesus, the expectation was that He would go to speak to them as soon as possible. Family was very important in Jewish culture, but so it is with us. If we were doing something and then learnt that our family we just outside and had come to see us our natural reaction would be to go and see them. Jesus, however, would use this incident as an opportunity to teach the people something different.
12:48-50
Jesus responded, as He often did, in a way that was totally unexpected. “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” He then pointed to the disciples and declared that they were His real family. The most important bond to Jesus is made through obeying God the Father. That brings us far closer to God than any blood relationship. We should note the repeatedly stressed importance of obedience. You cannot read the gospels without realising the importance of obedience.
