Matthew 13:33-35 - I will open my mouth in parables

13:33

Yeast is often used to symbolise evil working its way through something, but here it represents the good of the kingdom. We do see that evil has permeated so many areas of life, but it is possible for the good of the kingdom to work its way through systems as well. Before our governments and society decided that abandoning God’s ways was a good idea, the systems of western governments had been greatly influenced by Christian values. This is not to say they were perfect by any means, but the influence of Christianity was undeniable, as Tom Holland’s book, Dominion, has demonstrated.

13:34,35

Jesus did most of his teaching in terms of parables. In fact all his teaching to the crowds was in parables. Matthew then quotes from Psalm 78:2 and says this was what the prophet said. Psalm 78 is attributed to Asaph, and 2 Chronicals 29:30 says he was a seer (a prophet). However, the Bible has a broader definition of what a prophet was than we sometimes have, so people like David and Moses were prophets.
