Jeremiah 27:16-22 - Serve the king of Babylon

27:16

The “prophecies” of the false prophets got more dramatic and outlandish. They predicted that the articles from the temple that were now in Babylon would be brought back. “They are prophesying lies to you”. In charismatic circles we need to be very careful about this, for some of the stuff that passes for prophecy is utter rubbish, and the same tactics are employed as were used by the false prophets of Jeremiah’s day.

27:17-22

“Do not listen to them. Serve the king of Babylon”. One can imagine how wrong this would sound to the people. One can imagine theological arguments being raised against it! Yet it was the word of the Lord. The Lord was judging His people and they needed to submit to His judgement. Indeed, far from articles being returned from Babylon, the remaining articles in the temple would be carried off to Babylon.  There would come a day when they would be returned, but this would be when the Lord decided, when He would bring them back.
