28:12-14
It seems that Jeremiah did actually have something further to say to Hananiah, or rather God had something to say to him, through Jeremiah. The word is that God’s word will be fulfilled. Hananiah’s amateur dramatics would do nothing to change the word of God.
28:15-17
The consequences of Hananiah’s actions would be very serious indeed. The Lord would kill Hananiah, and this is indeed what happened, a mere seven months later. This is a bit like the incident with Peter and Ananias and Sapphira in Acts. Why so serious? Because lying in the name of the Lord is a serious matter. First it is an offence against God. Then it is harmful to the people. The people who submitted to Babylon would live, those who resisted would die. Telling lies in the name of the Lord is a deadly serious business.
