29:13,14
Jesus said, “ask, seek, knock” (Matt 7:7,8), and in 29:12-14 we have this trilogy. A saved people will seek the Lord with all their heart. This is in stark contrast to the purely superficial calling on God that had gone on in the nation. It involves being prepared to do whatever God tells us to do, to accept His word. When we truly seek we will find God, when we knock the door will be opened. The Israelites would be brought back from captivity. “where I have banished you”. They needed to accept their guilt.
29:15,16
Remember that these words are directed not to those in Jerusalem, but to the exiles in Babylon. The exiles would have heard rumours and tales of the false prophets in Jerusalem who were prophesying the defeat of Babylon, and they would wonder how Jeremiah’s words fitted in with this. Those who remained in Jerusalem were actually living in continuing resistance to the Lord. They were not some form of brave resistant fighters.
