13:36,37
Jesus now explains the parable of the weeds to the disciples. Note again that they had to come to Him for the explanation. We need to inquire of Jesus. He tells them that the one who sowed the good seed was the Son of Man. It is Jesus who sows the seed. Even when we tell people, it is really Jesus doing it. We act on His behalf, we are His ambassadors. We always need to be aware that the church and the mission are Christ-centred, emanate from Christ, and proceed from Him. We are forever becoming man-centred. Even if we are doing something evangelistic we so often approach it from a man-centred perspective.
13:38,39
“The field is the world.” This is entirely consistent with the Great Commission to go into the world making disciples of all nations. I think this is the first time in Matthew that Jesus has explicitly stated the global nature of the gospel. The good seed, ie the wheat plants, are the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the people of the evil one, and it is the devil who sows the weed seeds. The harvest is the end of the age, and it is the angels who do the harvesting. So angels are directly involved in the end of the age. There is an incredible amount of teaching within this one simple parable.
