3:23
It is difficult to see whether the words from the end of v22 to the end of the chapter are words that Israelis actually saying, in which case they are a sham, or are the words that Jeremiah (and God) wants them to say, the reaction they should have. The idol worship had much of a show about it, a lot of noise, but it was a sham, a deception. It is only in the Lord that salvation is found. We should all remember that, for when we are in trouble there are many temptations. We need to know that the Lord is our God and our only hope of salvation.
3:24,25
As well as the recognition of the futility of looking anywhere else for salvation, there needs to be a recognition of our own sinfulness. The idols were not only useless, they consume so much of our energy, our wealth, our well-being. They are utterly destructive. So in v25 we have Israel admitting her sin, and the devastating effect it has had on her. “We have not obeyed the Lord”. This is what our society needs to admit.
