Colossians 4:1,2 - Continue steadfastly in prayer

4:1
It seems as if the chapter division was put in a rather odd place, and for no discernible reason, as it seems that this verse clearly belongs with the previous section. Masters are instructed to treat their slaves properly. Note that this clearly implies that the early church contained both slaves and masters in the same congregations. Masters are reminded that they have a Master in heaven, ie they are accountable. Earthly positions of power or authority may deceive us into thinking that we are the “masters of the universe”, or at least our tiny bit of it. We are all servants.

4:2

The Colossians are urged to devote themselves to prayer. Prayer is something we need to deliberately devote ourselves to, otherwise other things will crowd out prayer. We are to be watchful and thankful. So we are to be alert to what is going on, both in human terms in the world, and also in spiritual terms (and the two are intrinsically linked). Prayer is serious, but we are also to be thankful.
