Colossians 2:21-23 - They lack value in restraining sensual indulgence

2:21,22
Paul mentions again examples of these rules, “do not handle, do not taste, do not touch”. These rules are all related to things that are destined for destruction. They are to do with outward form, outward behaviour, not with the source of that behaviour (Matt 15:19). They are based on human teaching. Even if they have a good intention, they still come out of man’s rebellion, they are part of the rebellion.

2:23
Systems that have lots of rules and regulations seem impressive in some ways, they appear to be a laudable attempt to restraint ungodly passions. However, in reality they are actually useless, they have no real value in “restraining sensual indulgence”. The reason for this that they deal only with outward actions, they do not deal with the heart of the problem, which is the heart of man. The root of our problem is that we are sinful in our very nature. Only the cross and the Holy Spirit deal with that.
