Isaiah 57:8-10 - It is hopeless

57:8
As occurs on several occasions in the prophets, Israel’s spiritual adultery is likened to physical adultery. Israel should have trusted solely in the Lord. Indeed, she had no need to trust in anyone else. Yet she had symbols of various pagan deities, and she opened herself up to various false gods. In doing this she was forsaking the Lord. We need to bear in mind the importance of putting our trust in God alone.

57:9,10

Molek was the main god of the Ammonites. Israel also sent envoys to far away nations, when the help she needed was right at hand. They “descended to the realm of the dead”. These ventures were worse than useless. Moreover, it involved considerable effort in sending the envoys and worshipping false gods. Going any way other than God’s way is always a costly business, yet it yields nothing. Yet Israel refused to admit the futility of her actions, but put greater effort in to it.
