Isaiah 56:9-12 - The dogs have a mighty appetite

56:9,10
God now summons the enemies of Israel, represented by the “beasts of the field”. It looks as if this section applies to the pre-exilic situation. The enemies are invited to come and attack Israel.
Then we have God’s assessment of Israel’s situation, and it is not a pretty one. Her watchman are blind. The watchman are the prophets and the leaders, both religious and civic. They should be people who have spiritual discernment, people who know when the nation is following God’s ways, and when she is drifting from them, but they were utterly useless.

56:11,12
The appetite of the leaders was only for themselves, for their own well being and pleasure, instead of protecting the nation. They lacked understanding, they went their own way instead of God’s way, and they sought their own gain instead of the glory of God, and the well being of the people.

They were utterly blind. Let’s party today, and we will be able to do the same tomorrow. When people turn from God they think things will never change, but there comes a point when God calls a halt to our sin.
