Isaiah 9:6,7 - For to us a child is born

9:6
Why, indeed how, will all this happen? How can such a radical transformation come about? Now we get the answer. “For unto us a Son is given”. God gave His Son to us, Jesus was sent into the world from the Father, and He was born in the natural way, yet He was unique. “And the government would be upon His shoulders”. We so often forget the ruling aspect of Jesus. He is the king of kings and lord of lords.
So what will the nature of His rule be? He will be called “wonderful counsellor”. He will be known for the excellence of His wisdom, just contrast this with the politicians of our day! Then He is “mighty God”. He is no mere human ruler, but a divine ruler. Jesus is God. “Everlasting Father”. He does not rule as human rulers do, but with a heart of compassion. And he is the prince of peace. He brings peace to the world.

9:7

Of the increase of His government there will be no end, and it will be a rule of peace. He will reign on David’s throne. Now we know this is speaking about Jesus, but it is on David’s throne that He will reign. So He will reign over Israel. Judah and Israel were descending into chaos because of their abandonment of God. The Messiah will reign in justice and righteousness. And this will be accomplished by the zeal of the Lord. There is a positive commitment to God’s purposes.
