Isaiah 10:26,27 - The yoke will be broken

10:26
Graphic language is often used in prophecies against Israel, here it is used against Judah’s enemies. This is done to stress the realism of what God is saying, to help communicate the reality of it to the hearers. Midian was defeated by Gideon, and the reference to Egypt probably has the Red Sea incident in mind.

10:27

So the burden and the yoke will be lifted, the burden that Assyria inflicted upon Israel would be lifted. With sin there comes a twofold burden, and we need to take full account of both. First and foremost there is the judgement from God on our sin. The first few chapters have been stressing this. Above all else Judah needed to get right with God, as does every human being. If we neglect this aspect of things we will get nowhere, but note how reluctant people are to face up to this. Even so-called evangelicals will minimise the judgement attracting/deserving aspects of sin. At the same time there is the enemy oppression aspect of sin. We become slaves, we become subject to oppressive forces. This will usually take the form of human oppression, but behind it will be demonic forces. In some cases it will be direct oppression from demonic forces. We need to take account of both. Have you noticed how often you will have one group of Christians stressing that a person, or a group of people, are sinners. Then you will have another group stressing that they are victims. Human beings are both sinners and victims.
