Isaiah 10:28-34 - Lebanon will fall before the Mighty One

10:28-32
We are now back to the description of the Assyrian invasion, listing various villages that they would pass through. The army seems to be making quick progress, but Assyria is only able to shake its fist at Jerusalem, for there they will be halted. We see this scenario working out several times in history. The German army under Hitler made rapid progress through Russia, getting very close to Moscow, but was then halted there. In that case the halt was a result of supply lines being overstretched, the Russian winter, and Russia getting its act together. Here it was a result of direct intervention by the Lord.

10:33,34

Assyria would seem so mighty, so invincible, yet her advance would come to a grinding halt, and she would eventually be destroyed. Isaiah describes this in terms of lofty trees being felled.  The message is that we should never be overawed by a seemingly invincible enemy, but we should always fear the Lord. It is He who determines the course of history.
