11:1
There have been prophecies of terrible destruction on Israel. Assyria would defeat the northern kingdom, and almost conquer Judah. Later Babylon would conquer Jerusalem, destroying the temple, and many would go off in to exile. Yet a shoot would come forth from the stump of Jesse. Well the destruction would be devastating, it would not be complete, there would be a remnant. And from this remnant would come forth a shoot. And a Branch would come from the roots. The branch is often uses as a messianic term. The roots of the Messiah would be in all that God had already done. We need to recognise that there is one continual thread running through the Bible, from beginning to end. God’s plan has not changed, and it will be fulfilled.
11:2
We now go fully messianic. “The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him”. Remember that in Luke 4:18 Jesus quoted Isaiah 61:1,2, saying that Spirit of the Lord was upon Him. The people were amazed at the wisdom and authority of Jesus’ teaching. He had amazing insight, and demonstrated great power. He had great knowledge. But the overriding feature of His ministry was His submission to the Father. Jesus was both the most submissive person to ever walk the earth, and the most powerful and authoritative. There is a lesson for us all in that.
