Mark 6:49-51 - Is it a ghost?

6:49
However, the disciples saw Jesus they thought it was a ghost. Why did they think this? Very simply, because people do not walk on water! Therefore, it had to be something strange such as a ghost, or so the disciples thought. They cried out in their shock.

6:50
Seeing Jesus walk on water troubled them greatly. This yet another example illustrating that 1st century people were not gullible fools, at least no more than we are today! Jesus talked with them to reassure them. “Be of good cheer” (NKJV) or “Take courage” (NIV). There was nothing to worry about, “It is I” is the common translation, though apparently the Greek can be translated as “I am”, giving this an altogether more momentous import, strongly implying the divinity of Jesus. However, I think this is pushing it a little in this instance.

6:51
Mark, unlike Matthew, does not mention the matter of Peter walking on the water (Matt 14:28-30). This is generally taken as being consistent with Peter being the primary source for Mark’s gospel, and Peter not wanting to draw attention to himself. Jesus got into the boat and the wind ceased. The disciples were utterly astounded.
