Isaiah 10:15-19 - Does the axe raise itself?

10:15
God now questions Assyria’s boasting. Isaiah likens Assyria to various instruments. The instrument can do nothing unless a person yields the tool. It is helpless on its own. The same is true of all of us. The world encourages us to view ourselves as autonomous. Now we do have a degree of “agency”, ie we can do things, we can make decisions. But all that we do is limited by God, and the extent of our success is determined by God. We are creatures, created beings. We had no say in whether or not we would come into existence, we had no say in the day of our birth. If we are to view our lives aright, we need to view ourselves as creatures.

10:16-19

So Assyria, after she had accomplished the purpose for which God sent her, will be brought low. All the things that Assyria boasted in will be brought to nothing. The sovereignty of God in all things is one of the fundamental themes of Isaiah.
