When the soldiers went into the woods they saw wild honey on the ground. However, they all observed the oath that they had been bound by. Jonathan, however, was unaware of the oath, so he did take some of the honey. This had a reviving effect, “his eyes brightened”. He must have wondered why no one else was taking the honey, then one of the soldiers told him about his father binding them by a strict oath.

We now get some insight into the relationship between Jonathan and Saul. He has little respect for his father, thinking that he has caused trouble for the nation. He then points out how the honey revived him. If the army had not been bound by this stupid oath they would have been much more effective in routing the enemy.
