1 Samuel 14:11-15 - The Lord has given them into the hand of Israel

14:11,12

So Jonathan and his armour bearer showed themselves to the Philistine purpose. The Philistines were very disdainful, likening them to rats crawling out of a hole. They called them up reckoning that they would make short work of them. Jonathan sees this as a positive sign that the Lord has given them into the hands of Israel. Note that the circumstances would say much the opposite.

14:13-15

So they climbed up and “the Philistines fell before Jonathan”. He and his armour bearer killed twenty men in total. We are not given any details of how the battle unfolded. Panic then struck the whole army. There are a number of occasions where God throws the enemy into a state of panic (e.g. 1 Sam 5:9; 7:10; Is 31:9; Zech 12:4). The ground shook, and we are told it was a panic sent by God. Often when we look at situations we look at our own resources, we look at the enemies resources, but we forget to look at what God will do.
