We now get laws on vows. A great difference between the Lord and the devil is truth and lies. The word of the Lord is completely reliable, it is the most solid foundation that one can build upon. Conversely, the devil has been a liar from the very beginning (Jn 8:44). We were chosen to be holy as the Lord is holy (Lev 11:44; 1 Pet 1:16). We are meant to be people of our word, i.e. people whose word can be trusted. Hence the importance of keeping vows.

However, the matter of vows is not quite so simple as everyone must keep their vows, for our vows may affect other people, and we may not have the authority to make the vow, or someone may have authority over us. Now a young woman living at home was still under her father’s authority. If she made a vow and the father becomes aware of it, but says nothing, then she is bound by the vow and should keep it. However, if the father forbids the vow she is released from it.
