Numbers 25:6-9 - He drove the spear right through them

25:6

People were weeping, presumably partly because they had sinned, but probably mostly because of the people they were losing. However, one man was carrying on in the sin of the nation, bringing a Midianite woman to his family. This was a brazen act of disobedience. As we see in our own society, people will flaunt and boast about their sin.

25:7-9

Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, now comes on the scene. So we see that some of Aaron's descendants were good. He is appalled at what is happening, so takes a spear and rams it through both the man and the woman. The plague on the people then stops. Now our natural reaction is to be appalled at what Phinehas did. We are not appalled at the sin of the people. We should also note that God approved of the actions. Perhaps we should consider our own responses.
