Numbers 25:10-18 - Phinehas has turned my anger away

25:10-13

God then speaks to Moses explaining what has happened. God approved of Phinehas because he was jealous for the name of the Lord. We should also note that his actions saved many lives. God gives Phinehas His covenant of peace. God approved of his actions. Through his zeal he made atonement for the sins of the people.

25:14-18

The man who had sinned is now named, and he came from a high up family. The Midianite woman is also named, and she too came from a high up family in Midian. Moses is then told to harass the Midianites. So we see first that Israel is held responsible for her sin, but Midian is also held responsible for leading Israel astray. In Matt 18:6 Jesus says woe to anyone who causes one of His little ones to stumble. Both those who sin and those who cause others to sin are responsible for their actions.
